If you’re a 3D designer working on Extended Reality (XR) projects, having quick guides can make your job easier and help you create amazing experiences. Here are some simple cheatsheets that cover essential aspects of 3D design for XR.

Preparation & Planning

Define Purpose: Know if the model is for AR or VR; this affects the level of detail, optimization, and user interaction.

Platform & Device: Target devices (e.g., mobile, headset, desktop) have specific limitations (e.g., polycount, texture size, lighting capabilities).

User Experience (UX): Consider how the user will interact with the object and if it will be viewed from all angles or only specific perspectives.

Modeling

Polycount Optimization:

• Aim for low-poly models to ensure smooth performance.

• Use LOD (Level of Detail) for high-performance optimization, especially in VR.

• Reduce polycount by merging vertices and using decimation tools.

Scale Accuracy:

• Use real-world units (meters or centimeters).
